I recall going to several of the Rainbow gigs, they were the highlight of my year as a spotty teenager. Memories of those gigs still remain.

Strange. I remember the Guildford Uni gig and a
host of others I was at, but can't remember any
moments that particularly stand out.
I do recall that I've been to hundreds of gigs in my
time and never enjoyed any of them more than when
watching ATF!
Wasn't there a firework let off at some stage during
the set on one tour?

Ahhh. That's what I meant. Must have been some
sort of charge in it as it was pretty loud if I remember
rightly.

The confetti bomb reminds me - as a sad buch we used to play covers of ATF songs to small groups of other sad individuals. But, we liked the confetti bomb and, decided we would try and go one better, being also adicted to Defender we called it the Smarty Bomb. Our pyrotechnic expert "Big Phil" (25 stone of seething adolenscent pyromania) used the following technique. he took a large catering bean can, put a couple of crow scarers (illegal fire works) in the bottom, placed a disc of card over the top and filled the tin with smarties. The idea being to make a nice loud bang and gently shower the audience with smarties. What actually happended was that the tin went off with a thunder like a 25 lb howitzer, smarties rocketted into the ceiling of the bar. those that did not pass through the hole created by the explosion ricioched into the those unfortunates in the front rows who where lucky to escape with mere smarty cuts ! After the singer got back on his feet the band restarted. Big Phil could not be found that evening.

I was half of the four-armed alien in one of the newsletter/fan club
photos. A marquee gig if I recall... a rather attractive young lady I'd
never met before... [overpriced] alcohol... hot summer
night... ATF in fine form... Heat of the moment/youth of toay.
etc.
And I never ever saw her again.
Apart from that some university gig in South East London, where The
Bible supported. And various Music Machine gigs; and the Rock Garden,
too. And until recently I had a cardboard cutout of Elvis Costello we,
err, "liberated" from the Hope and Anchor one night - trying to get the
Hammond and mixing desk into the cellar there was a nightmare. And
another evening where four of us got stopped on our motorbikes driving
the wrong way down some main South London throughfare [I was a West
Londoner] at 2am after another university gig - fortunately our claim
of coming out of a side entrance to the uni and there being no One Way
signs was provable. But we did turn round and drive off in the other
direction. Seemed all for the best.
Mispent youth or what?
Rupert

Before confetti bombs there were smoke flashes which went off
in the first song. Ali P was in charge and we used to get the
flash powder and containers from Theatre Projects in Covent
Garden. There was a deposit on the flashpots which was
seldom recovered (cos the flashpots were never found).
All became clear much later when it was discovered that the
flashes only needed the charge from a PP9 battery to work -
and not 240 volts from the mains. All very pre-Health and
Safety regulations - as was the fuseboard at the old (real)
Marquee in Wardour Street which sometimes used nails and
screws instead of fuses. Glad someone else remembers
getting the Hammond into the H&A - a feat not helped by the
fact that the ladder was shot of a few rungs.
