My first was in a club in Bradford, just before the Thunderbirds music the dj played an Arthur Brown record 'Fire'!! Can't remember how much it was but I think it was John's first tour. The second encore was 'Signs of change'.

Bournemouth Town Hall - 7 November 1979
An amazing night. Stood just feet away from the band and rocked the night
away. Couldn't hear properly for two days afterwards!

Yes know how you felt Adrian - my ears are still whooshing and ringing today as a result of over exposure on the ears.
As JR has said previously on the forum do take some protection
When I am chilled out and not so stressed it is bearable

Arbermarle Youth Club, Harold Hill.
Summer '77 (in the days of Nick Battle).
Can't remember how much it cost, but it was next to nothing.

Excuse the preamble but this is my first time. I've been watching these
forums and the site for months. Have been a fan of the band since
around the time of Signs of Change, virtually to the point of obsession
in my teens though for some reason I never became a Friend, even though
several of my friends did after I had introduced them to the band. I
had even mastered all of my old vinyl to CD long before it all became
officially available.
Anyway, I just had to get in on this one, not just because it was my first ATF gig but because it was my first gig of any sort.
The Marquee, Wardour Street, London. I can't remember the date or the
cost but sometime in 1978 I guess. Any ideas anyone? The support band
were a bizarre and extraordinary combo called Dogwatch if that is any
help.
I was 14 and my brother drove us up to town from deepest Sussex in his
old grey Mini Estate. It was loud, sweaty and the most exciting thing I
had ever seen (the gig. Not my brother's car!)

GubGub,
I was at that gig at the Marquee too, but I don't remember the date - I think the cost was £2.50
I do remember Dogwatch. Unless I have mixed them up with another band, they had about seven in the group including a man on trumpet about 50 years old who was wearing a pith helmet. The lead singer acted crazy for the whole set. I remember at one stage during a song called "The Discopath", he picked up a monitor and threw it into the crowd. It turned out to be a cardboard imitation, but my friend did not know that as he saw it hurtling towards him!
There was another support group to ATF at the Marquee (not very good) where the lead singer wore see through plastic sandals. Anyone remember what they were called?
Regards,
Kevyn

i *think* the see-through plastic sandals band were Rumble Strips, who
I rather liked. They used to support a lot of bands at the Marquee and
The Nashville [I saw them several times supporting Racing Cars and
Landscape]. Or it might have been Portraits, who were poppy rock,
and released a clear-red-vinyl single called 'Little Women' on Ariola. There was
also Supercharge, whose members included Albie Donnelly [who played on
the first Fish Co LP]; they played kind of satirical rock. They'd say
they were going to do a laid back number next and then all lie down!
Excellent. Other regular support bands in London those days [don't
think I ever saw them with ATF though] included Angletrax. There was
also some weird German power-rock trio at one Marquee gig, whose singer
could be found post-gig listening to the changing room door squeak
[maaaaaan]. And of course ATF and Writz shared several gigs,
espeically at the Music Machine in Camden.
Those were the days!
