Amazing - I quite like Billy Idol. I saw him on stage with The Who on their 1996 Quadrophenia tour. He was playing the bell boy, and did a good job of it too.

Knowing Billy Billy is about him puts me off him  .

Sorry to pour a dampener on the thread but I am confident
that Billy, Billy is not (primarily) about Billy Idol and
I have to say I have never heard it ever was! It is
derived from a complex source involving a mix of various
people we met on our travels and tours.

Remember we were managed by Harvey Goldsmith at the time
and, as the UK's biggest concert impresario, he kindly
arranged for us to get into most of the big concerts he
was promoting and also to attend many of the parties that
went with touring.

To get the full story you would have to ask Andy P
himself... What I can say with certainty is there was a
time we were at one of Billy Connolly's birthday parties
when a very wasted Pete Townshend turned up somewhat
late. We were able to see first hand the devastating
effect that 'Rock and Roll' can have...

There is also the aspect of this song was written at a
time we were gaining popularity worldwide and we could
have so easily lost our way too... therefore I say there
is a strong autobiographical aspect contained withing the
narrative.

For reference it is written very much in a folk song
tradition as a story where the writer is both distanced
from the action and yet very involved. This is different
from the usual Rock approach.

maybe not! If the Shepherds at the nativity had a part time job in a Police tribute band they could be called The Fleece. They could then do paradies such as

De Do Do, De Baa Baa Baa or Every little thing she does is mutton, I'll be wrapped around you fig tree. We wear skirts, in a material world, and the classic Massage in a br, Well maybe not!

Then the Wise men could be a Queen tribute band. 'A kind of Magi'

'We are the Magi my friend

We'll keep on walking til the end'

They could have a side line in ice cream - Bohemian Raspberry.
