Thanks for the explanation, Pete. I'm glad it's not about Billy Idol - I can carry on enjoying the memory of seeing him with The Who!

Talking of which (or rather Who) Pete Townshend did indeed get wasted a lot in those days - as a Who fan, I have to defend him by pointing out that he doesn't drink any more (and, as has been said on the other thread, does a lot of work for charity).

I always thought the song was about two brothers, one of whom made it and the other didn't. For that reason, I assumed it had to be fictional rather than being about a real person.
