Kevyn, thankyou for explaining the difference in clear terms that a seagull could understand. You could give our Maggie a bit of communication coaching - she's passionate, but her overwhelming intelligence often means we don't know what she's going on about. I think she's a teacher....
Now, excuse me, I must fly - I sense danger coming...!
^^
P.S. You have to find a way of explaining it to Zippy that involves cats, dolphins and ATF (and Rugby!)

So Kevyn, does that mean you noticed what I asked if anyone had noticed?
(I'm sure you'll understand, even if the Gull doesn't!! )

Maggie, how can it be a noun, if it ends with "ing"?

Simply stop putting "ing" on the end of the noun!!
Clear enough, Seagull?

I'm not surprised that you're confused Wendy!! (Kevyn's made his examples
unnnecccesssarily complicated by introducing our beloved apostrophe too!!!)
(Seagull will need satnav to help out!! )

Kevyn, I'm sincerely glad that you've well and truly emerged from ATF-
hibernation!! I have such a hard time 'Sometimes'....... i.e. trying to
maintain MAM's English in this forum!!

What?! |

The doctors practise - this is what the doctors do
The doctors' practice - this is the doctors' business
partnership
Try this sentence:
The forwards practise their scrummaging techniques at rugby
practice.

I'm totally disorientated by all this quoting. I can't work out who doesn't understand what any more, but I do feel the apostrophe is necessary to clarify the issue, and that you can't just take "ing" dropping for granted.
Maggie, what's "Gibe"? I wouldn't dream of giving you none

A gibe is a taunt. A very apt piece of wordplay from MAM,
as, of course, the original lyric by the band is "Don't
give me no jive".
