Next question: How do you record a MIDI? (Not Zippy or Maggie's kind!)

You can plug your synth into quite a lot of PC sound
cards these days (the socket looks exactly like the old
DIN sockets you used to see on the back of cassette
recorders).

Many people buy sound cards specifically designed for
home recording or recording studios like the M-Audio
1010LT.

Once you're plugged into your PC you use some software to
record the MIDI file. Very often they're studio packages
that let you record MIDI and/or sound waves (eg Vocals).

The MIDI files usually have .mid extension and the sound
files are usually .wav files. When you play back your
masterpiece the software plays your synth for you while
simultaneously playing any sound files you recorded.
Simples!

Hope this helps :o)

I'm never actually going to do this, but it's interesting, and I'm just about still with you. I take it, from what Dave said, that one can't create a MIDI from previously recorded music - or can you?? I'm just wondering if Dave could recreate something - or does it have to be imput from a single instrument?

I'm hanging on tightly to that picture of the pianola roll!

Well, Maggie, maybe at the next oppurtunity we should have a photo on FB of you and Zippy side by side, comparing your wavelengths and hemlengths.

(I didn't mention Greenbelt)

Seagull, I don't think I will get to (am I not allowed to mention it!?), that place this year. Have never been either.

Will compare hemlengths with maggie next time I see her. Bet I will be wearing jeans !!

Ian, totally understand the Midi thing, sort of, well maybe, actually haven't got a clue what you are talking about!  I hope you are not turning into a meerkat, Mr Simples !!

Spent yesterday at Glorious Goodwood, was a good day, I broke even, or rather lost £2. ie. bet £32, won £30. There was a lot of drunk singing on the coach on the way home, not from me I might add !!

Did I mention, I am wearing a belt today and it is green !!

Behave, Zeagull and Tippy!!

I just about always wear jeans too, Wendy, so our hemlengths will be
about the same distance from the ground, as long as we both wear
flatties!!

I get the impression that we're also on the same wavelength i.e. Radio
Four .... The Archers!!

Ian's initial pianola party-piece was fine until SOMEONE asked him a
further question!!

However, the relief that I felt when I realised that I really don't need to
understand about midi files was overwhelming!!

Next ATF gig, I'll explain the workings of the sound desk to anyone who asks: as long as Joe is there to explain it to me, of course...
