The Rural Dean went to visit one of the vicars in his
deanery and found him looking sad. "What's the matter?"
he asked.
"I've had my bike stolen," the Vicar replied, "But to
make it worse, I am sure that the thief is one of the
congregation."
"I know what to do," the wise old Rural Dean said, "You
should preach a sermon series on the 10 Commandments.
When you get to 'Thou shall not steal' look about the
congregation, and the guilty person will not be able to
hide his embarrassment."
A few weeks later, the Rural Dean met again with the
Vicar, who was now looking much happier. "Did you get
your bike back?" the Rural Dean asked.
"Yes." replied the Vicar.
"And did you preach a series on the 10 Commandments?"
asked the Rural Dean.
"Yes." replied the Vicar.
"And when you got to 'Thou shall not steal' did the
culprit give himself away?"
"Not exactly," replied the Vicar, "When I got to 'Thou
shsll not commit adultery, I remembered where I left it!"
