I couldn't do German at all at school. They assumed I'd be no good, because at first I wasn't too good at French. Stupid thinking! I went on to study French at A Level, and now I'm living in Germany since 1997, but had to teach myself everything - which means my grammatical  base has a few holes, and has taken ages to achieve.
