One of the points I was trying to make about the Big
Issue is that buying a copy versus a download to get
History whatsit to number one is EXACTLY about being salt
and light! A big bonus is that the latest edition of the
Big I is actually a very good read too...
When someone buys a copy, half the cover price goes to
the seller, that is 85p, pretty close to the 79p of a
download. The musicians, writers and/or a charity (which
I do not believe is the case this time) get a tiny
element (~3 to 10p) of the download, Apple get around 30p
and the rest goes to the record company.
Kingsway or Furious have even been even more greedy and
put two editions out, thereby diluting the chart
position. Frankly I don't care about the band or the
record company, I do care about the conning of your
average Christian into thinking this campaign will convey
the Easter message into people's lives... that should be
down to us to do, not passing the buck!
You are correct, Seagull, I have extensive thoughts on
matters like these, my blog has a great deal more to chew
over!

Interesting.
Do you really thing God likes Brotherhood of Man? He's even more
ecclectic than I thought!
For me a campaign to get anything to number one is always rather
shoddy and completely defeats the point of the charts being there.
Doesn't matter what it is, Christian or charity etc.
It's a pretty naff way to hit the headlines. And then what. Delirious have
split up. If they get to number one what then?
It's not particularly being salt and light, it's making money for the wrong
reasons, completely lacks imagination and as a campaign to get Christian
music to number one (not delirious) the song choice is awful and out of
touch.
So what about me asking people to email Bob Harris at Radio 2?
Not sure this is the same thing. I ask people to spread the word about my
music, ATF, Me and Gareth. People don't think to email or call radio
stations for requests and as Bob is inundated with CD's the more nugdes
he can get to listen to a CD the better.
A couple of years ago a friend of ours did a session on Bob's Saturday
show. She handed Bob a Gareth Davies-Jones CD personally. Over a year
later, Gareth hired a PR company who managed to get him played on
Bob's show. Bo's opener was, "I can't understand why I haven't heard of
Gareth before"
So, I'll keep sending the man CD's. If you like them and you thing they're
worthy of a bit of radio play then ask Mr Harris to play them.
I don't have a hidden agenda. I'm a Christian but I just try and preach
through what I do rather than what I say. People listen more.
And if everyone here goes out and downloads my latest song from iTunes
I'll get to number 389! But the support is rather touching

Well, as regards God's music tastes, Rob, I'm not omniscient; its just that He says in the bible "My ways are not your ways, and your thoughts are not my thoughts." so I thought it just might be possible.... but maybe it was a long shot!
Thanks for expounding Banksy! Twitter's just too short. I don't get it. I think I got a bit convoluted, but I reckon we agree that buying the Big Issue regularly can be an expression of being salt and light, and of course people of all faith or non faith persuasions will have their reasons to buy it. Christians don't have a monopoly on good motivations. But whatever, like you say, its a very well thought out and fair scheme, and it's helpful you've explained it further, with the comparison to the History Maker campaign or others.
I thought the way to get through to Bob Harris was to whisper in his ear...

A copy of Signs of Change was sent to Alan 'Fluff' Freeman and the BBC, and he happily played the title track in it's entirety.

Well gotta say some views have changed my view and sentiment of my last post.
I guess that I'm so disgruntled with the music business at the moment that my gripe is to try and get one over on them.......and maybe some are right in saying that using easter and christmas to hype the charts with Christian music should not be used in a joint argument.
If thousands of people on the facebook campaign all bombarded djs on the radio to play their tune and the djs decided they liked it and so played it.....and it then got to number 1 would that be more acceptable?
Love and Peace to all on the forum this Easter.

Hey Rob, I willingly emailed Bob Harris........ but never listen to his show!!!!
I had various encouragements from Purashop and Crossrhythms to
download Historymaker and didn't respond, mainly because of similar
reasons to those already given by others.
But when the encouragement came from my daughter I did not want to
crush her enthusiasm, I just had to lose my scepticism and perhaps risk
becoming childlike.
