After After the Fire? After the Fire, Holy Trinity Church, Beckenham, 27 November, 2008. It
wasn't an auspicious start. We walked in to be greeted by row upon row
of that particular kind of chair that you find only in churches it
seems, all fasted together with interlocking steel bands that bound
them rigidly. This was the first time in over thirty years
that I had ever sat down for an After the Fire Gig. A note to the
vicar: Next year take out the first six or eight rows and give us room
to boogie!) Anyway, once I'd got used to that
shock, fair enough, on came the band and the night was underway. A new
drummer (my teenage daughter pining for the dearly departed Matt) and a new singer, Rob Halligan promised something, but I have
to say in the first half, they did not deliver. They were battling
against a very difficult sound environment and the new personnel seemed
to be playing in two completely different bands. Pete's keyboards were
barely discernible above the maelstrom and some lacklustre versions of
the old hits were trotted out without much to recommend them. Was this
it? Was it over for After the Fire? At that point I thought the only
thing that could save them as a band would be the (unlikely) return of
Andy Piercy on vocals and rhythm guitar – and if that were not possible
they should quietly call it a day with good grace and thanksgiving for
thirty years brilliant music. The only highlight of the first half was
a technical hitch on Pete's keyboard, which we insisted he had
engineered for the sake of those few audience members who still
remembered the old Hammond C3 and the Leslie… At
the beginning of the second set, new boy Halligan was given the
opportunity to highlight some of his own material and eventually brought the rest of the band back on to join him. I
don't know what was in the tea the band consumed during the break but
it certainly worked. First Halligan was able to showcase what he
brought to the lineup – an amazing voice and a powerful rock and roll
performance. Secondly, the stalwarts on the sound desk seemed to have
mastered the difficult environment the church presented and the sound
was much improved. Thirdly the band seemed to coalesce around Halligan
and became a real, working band – all of them. A swift move to the
American West Coast with the new material and suddenly I was at a
different concert. Johnny Russell came alive and his blistering guitar
work was some of the best I'd heard from him in ages. There was fire in
his belly again. Then for me came the biggest test. While I am at heart
a fan of the old Prog After the Fire, the song, Billy Billy has always
my favourite ATF track. Was the new lineup up to it? Halligan
took to it like it was his own, providing a searing vocal that invested
the song with new power and Johnny was there giving it all he had from
that newly ignited furnace in his soul. I don't mind telling you that
by the end f it, I was weeping with sheer joy. A slightly faltering
version of Der Kommisar (not the easiest song to sing, Rob) set the
scene for a stunning finale of Laser Love and Power of a Jet and the
night was over all too soon. Bands do change
and develop – those who still have something to say do anyway - and
that's certainly happening with ATF. I hope Rob Halligan stays with
them and they continue to allow his presence to change, challenge and
inspire them. Maybe this is After After the Fire? Maybe we are looking
at the development of a whole new musical group? Maybe this is
something new, but they're still my favourite band.

Degs Hi
Thank you for coming to the show. I'm glad you enjoyed some of it.
I welcome constructive comment about the gig and yours certainly falls in that category so thank you for it.
In response
1) not long before the show started you might have seen feverished members of the band and the crew trying to make the chairs look a little bit less church like. We had debated before hand what might be a good way of accomodating those who wanted to stand and dance and those who wanted to sit. Alas some of the orignal ATF fans are of an age where they prefer to sit. It sounds like we got it wrong for you this year. We will try and do better next year. Thank you for telling us about it.
2) I'm sorry about the sound in the first half. The second half was much better wasn't it? Here at HTB we are looking to see what we can do to make it better in the future. We have some ideas about that and we will see what we can do. We have the venue we have and there limits to the changes we can make however.
3) K (my wife) and I have spent a total of more than 60 years in the chemistry industry and if we don't know how to put a jolt into a cup of tea...
4) Mr Halligan. A star as you say. I very much hope we will see him at HTB again. Please come.
Again thank you for coming. I'm glad you enjoyed some of it, I hope where we went wrong did not take away too much enjoyment for you and thank you for telling us the areas where you think we can change. I appreciate it.

Degs, it doesn't sound like you have had an opportunity to see the band at all in the last 5 years.
I think your comments are harsh regarding the 1st half of the show. Yes, the sound from where I was (2nd row)was not great. I couldn't really hear any vocals, but that was improved After The ... Break. BTW that was a very very long break. It seemed like over 30 minutes. Anyway 2nd half sounded better, but I enjoyed the whole show immensly and I hope the band did too.
Hope to see you in Cambridge.

I've seen the Band at least once a year in the past five years, I'd say, but this is the first time I've seen them with Rob and Tim, but I guess that's all most of us can say.
I was in the second row too. I was the big fat hairy geezer freaking out on the right hand side.
I can only read it (and write it) as I see it, and to be fair, others in my party didn't have so much difficulty but there you are. Maybe I'm just getting old!
Cambridge is rather too far of my beaten track I'm afraid. But enjoy it for me and post your review!
Derek

2007-F, I've always liked you.
Mark, thanks for the comments re the interval. I didn't time how long it was but I think it was quite long. Partly we ran it on because people were still queueing to buy teas and buns which were the most profitable part of the evening for us, partly we ran it on because the band seemed to be having a good chat with the audience and partly we ran it so K's tea jolt had time to work. Was it too long?
I wished I known people were nipping down the Kent House Tavern; I was more than ready for one.
Derek, please speak as you find. If the promoters (and the band) don't hear concerns they can't deal with them. I'm not saying that every concern raised will result in a change but at least it will be considered. I certainly welcome constructive comment and I felt your comment was just that.

Tim - The interval wasn't too long if it meant "getting the drinks in". I guess I just couldn't wait for the rest of the show.
ps any chance of Pilgrim or Suspended Animation on Friday?
Derek - I was right in the middle of row 2. Will you be at the last show?
