Thanks Timey for passing the ball.
Ah yes Propaganda,
"a secret wish" really an outstanding album, but failed to have the success it earned. Tasting the europeanwide fame because of the polished Trevor Horn/Steven Lipson production on their ZTT label, their origins were more of the local "sophisticted arts" of Düsseldorf (connection to Kraftwerk) scene. In 1990 the band became half german, half british and recorded another cd "1234" full of catchy pop tunes with even Howard Jones songwriting for them. After having absolutely no success with it they split up.
Yello is a swiss 2 man project: Boris Blank music/ Dieter Meier words.
Speaking of german artists in UK charts - more recently I remember "Scooter" having been on No. one position, but lets call that no brain music connecting yelling with dance rhythms.

You certainly are knowledgeable Didi, and most interesting.

Proportionately practically every other European country in the 80's probably appeared in the u.k charts more than German acts.

I wonder who would have been in the German charts...u.k acts.??

How did ATF get on in the German Charts.....Der Kommissar??

Unfortunately ATF made no great impressions on the german charts. Der Kommissar

did only no.62 (as far as I remember). But positive public discussions were made

appreciating the first(?) english cover version. More interesting the overall sellings of

the 1980-f 7": distributed and sold over years, it would have been a massive hit

when that happened within a quarter year or so. 1982 was the first year ATF

happened in germany with rising interests, but that`s history.

You are right Mr. dominion - Boney M. was a german Band project founded and

lead near Frankfurt by Frank Farian. He did the same with Milli Vanilli.

Interestingly (he said optimistically), Propaganda got a bit carried away with this particular song.  On the album "A Secret Wish" (1984) there are actually two versions - the brilliant, heavy, 'drone' version called "Jewel" and the far mellower version called "Dual".  Then on their next album "Wishful Thinking" (1985) they added a third version, another electro-rocker called "Jewelled".  (D'you see, all those very clever plays on words, geddit?)

The most intersting (zzzz...) fact of all is that "Jewelled" was the theme tune for BBC TV's coverage of the RAC Rally each November for many years, so intriguingly it was my love of rallying that got me into this particular band.

OK, to make this thread interesting again, who's got the most obscure story of a (non-musical) hobby getting them into a band?

I can think of a few non-musicians playing in bands, didn't the Beatles have a dodgy bassplayer before Macca took over? Some may say the Sex Pistols ... ... Some may say me! (I used to!!)
