Just wanted to give some feedback on last nights performance at Beckenham, as I have hardly slept for thinking about it.

Firstly, I never thought I would see ATF live again, so it was a great thrill to see them last night.

For me, the first real question is have they still got what it takes, and the answer to that is easy; they most certainly do!The acoustics were good, and the sound close enough to original. It was obviously sad not see Andy Piercy there, but John and Peter did a truly excellent job in his place.

The guys were lively and chatty and for close on 2 hours gave a great performance. Thanks a million.

But, why I am a little dispondant as well? I really been searching hard and I give the following, I hope constructive , reasons:

1) The venue was absolutely dire. No stage and no lighting to speak of. Who came with up this place!!

2) Sitting down hardly makes for a great atmosphere! I just had to stand up for the 2nd half. ATF concerts were and should be about getting up, singing, jumping to the music, not sitting down politely listening.

3) Lack of people. About 65 turned up I reckon. Pretty poor for a Saturday night I think. I am told about 100+ turned up the night before.

4) Costumes. Yes, I know Pete and John are getting on a bit, we all are, but come on guys, show a little bit of pizzaz!!

We can't bring back the past and some things are best left in the past; not ATF. The guys were great last night and it brought back so many really good memories for me. I understand that the venue later this week is a small club, so that should help improve things greatly, just a shame I can't get to anymore this time around.

I'd like to know what others thought about the gig.

Cheers

Paul

Dear Paul

I was surprised, sorry and sad that Saturday was not as good as you hoped. We ie both the band and I had spent a lot of time and energy trying to give people a night to remember and it is real shame if we did not meet your expectations.

I had a great time and people around me seemed to be having fun. You were standing next to me for a good part of the concert and you seemed to “know just what to do waving your hands in the air like you just don’t care” (oops sorry wrong band) so I hope some of the evening was fun for you. We certainly enjoyed having you and everyone else along. It was magnificent to see Tim Anderson (what a legend) Tim Hatwell as well as Leo who came all the way from South Africa there too. The music was brilliant but the people and craic were great too I thought. And thank you for your positive contribution to that.

I thought I’d comment on the points you made.

The venue? Well I think it is awesome (in several senses) as do others. Peter commented on it favourably both when he first saw it and during the set. The acoustics are much better than in many Victorian Gothic churches as HTB was before it was rebuilt. Anyway you didn’t like it and I’m sorry.

Why did we hold it there? Well it was a fund raiser for the church so we didn’t have to pay from a room hire charge. Secondly I don’t think I could have filled Wembley arena with this band.

The lights and staging were typical of what you get at small concerts. By way of example we light the stage with 4 white 500W PAR cans above the rear partition and 4 coloured 500W PAR cans on the drum riser: 2 directed on the drum kit and one on each of Peter and John. There was a decent height drum riser. At Farncombe I understand there were only 3 PAR cans and the drum kit was at about the same height as the rest of the band. All this kit is expensive and on the kind of takings we expect it is not possible to hire or buy big lights or stage. Even if I could have afforded to provide more lighting or more staging I would not have done so as it would have detracted from the intimacy of the evening. Our lighting controller could have provided lighting effects but on purpose I decided to go with simplicity.

Seating? Again I’m afraid it is not uncommon for gigs to be in churches with pews where there is no standing at all. I did think, for what nearly a second?, about removing the seats but I’m afraid many ATF fans prefer to sit.  Some people stood up and danced in their seats. Others like you came back 11 rows and stood. Additionally we left a space stage left, by John, for people to stand and dance without impeding seated people’s view although I don’t think anyone used it.

The numbers? What is your problem pal? The atmosphere was superb, I thought. Would you complain if you were at a decent Rolling Stones gig with 70 odd people present? The band spent a lot of time promoting the gig. I mailed nearly 100 churches with flyers. There is barely a noticeboard or letterbox for miles around which didn’t get information about the gig. I’ve been hassling radio stations and newspapers. The plain fact was we were competing with firework displays, nights by the telly, evenings down the pub etc. In the end only 70 odd people came. That is the way it was.

Peter and John are big enough and ugly enough to make their own comments on costume if they want. I would say however that they didn’t just come in off the street like that. I walked into the dressing room while Peter was changing which I think is an experience neither of us would like to repeat! Also life is change and were they to dress in the same style as years ago then ATF might not be a living, growing. changing thing but simply a parody.

It is long post I know and if you read this far thank you. I hope you’ll go to more ATF concerts but please don’t expect lighting or staging significantly better than Saturday’s.

Cheers!

Tim

Tim, firstly many thanks or the reply. I am really glad to have received it as I note that many people have read it but no one else has responded.

Let me start off by saying I am a HUGE ATF fan and always will be. I am playing the stuff 24/7 at the moment, just can't get enough and am driving the wife and kids mad.

I didn't go to the gig with any expectations at all, especially after all these years and I missed out on the previous Greenbelt performances.

Re the venue, we'll agree to disagree I guess, although I prefer a club type atmosphere myself. But if it raised some money for the church then all well and good. I realise that the guys really are not in this for the money.

I accept your comments re lighting. I understand the budget constraints you are under, I just don't think it was very effective, that's all.

Re Seating: this is down to the crowd on the day. It just would have been great if a number of people stood up to create a better atmosphere. It's a shame they didn't and sometimes that would come with more numbers. It probably wasn't going to happen with 70 odd people.

Re Numbers: it's just a shame that's all. Hopefully it was not too indicative of the rest of the tour. I know its pretty tough when you put in all that work and the rewards seems quite small. If you and the band are happy that that's what counts in the end. (maybe Wembley Arena next time !!)

Re Costumes: I did not expect Pete or John to wear costumes as they did many years ago. However ATF's image WAS important and I think that perhaps they felt it no longer is.

At the end of the day, the most important thing for me was to see ATF and they were really great, even more so that Pete and John did the vocals. (much better than the guy on the Greenbelt DVD, which just didn't work for me) Now I've seen ATF again, I want to do so again and again. (Shame I'm going abroad for week otherwise I would have gone to the others)

I just felt that with bit more ooomph, it could have perhaps been a little better. I don't want the band to go away and think it was not worthwhile and never do another tour. If they think it was good enough or better than good enough and got what they wanted and feel that they want to repeat the experience again, the who I am to argue!!!

They were a huge part of my youth and continue to be really important to me. I really hope that they continue to do more gigs in the future and I would love to see Andy Piercy come back for few more. Any news/thoughts/updates on that one would be appreciated.

Thanks again for your reply.

Long Live ATF.

Cheers

Paul

having been to see the band at the Soapbox gig where there were lights smoke and a good pa i can agree with some of the comments from above although the show part of last friday was not the same as the soapbox show the band were on top form if a little to unplugged for my taste but we are all getting older and i would not want to jump around on stage for 2 hours when i am nearly 60 ( although i will still be running and cycling then so who knows)
i am just glad to see the band again after 25 ish years and hope to see them again in the future

i took my 12 year old son with me on friday and he had a great time even though he had to site next to 2 young ladies on the front row for the second half

Dear Paul

Thank you very much for replying.

I'd urge you to see if you can do better. I don't mean that as a snide comment.

We are already talking with Peter to see if we can arrange another gig at HTB (now Matt can tell the difference between S Norwood and SE20!). I'm sure it is possible to do a better night out than the one we arranged even if it is much harder than you might think. Please do try.

You have to expect some challenges and ATF negotiating with you in a business like manner. Saturday was pretty good after all the hard work. I got to run around all day. I couldn't follow the gig as happily as if I was a punter and I didn't get a seat at the front. I had the horror of walking into the dressing room while Peter was changing :) but I did get a huge amount of satisfaction from seeing the gig come off rather well as I think and lots of people having a great night out. I could listen to xxx's language when there were problems with the sound check. I got Tim Anderson to come to something I'd arranged. I could mould the night somewhat as I pleased; if I hadn't been worrying about whether it was better to fall off a ladder or fry myself and my niece's boyfriend on the lighting rig. It was near my house. HTB made some money. And I got to see a rather staid churchwarden well into her 60s pogoing.

I'd genuinely encourage people to promote ATF gigs. I'm very happy to pass on what little I've learned. Peter will, I'm sure, pass on my contact details to anyone inclined to try.

Rgds
