Good stuff always remains and the crud disappears. The first time I heard Sultans of swing I thought there was a band who could play, I thought we would never hear from them again! I'm pleased to say I was wrong (again)

The radio doesn't feature much in my listening or purchase determining habits.

I go to small local gigs where I'm introduced to new artists as either the main act or the support act, and I get samplers from magazines I respect like Paste music. When I listen to the radio it's inevitably radio 4!

Possibly Keiths vision could happen, but only in areas where there is a local music scene on which to base its support.

After 5:30, all the stations play the same syndicated broadcast until 1a.m. It's just plain pathetic.

There is a bit of light at the end of the tunnel "Up North"

We have a great programme up here called "Raw Talent" which is syndicated on Radio Humberside, York, Leeds and Sheffield.

Thursday Night 19:00 till 22:00 worth a listen on the web

Check out web Page

I'm glad getlostdave mentioned Paste magazine - have you tried it's British equivalent, The Word, too?  While it doesn't solve the problem of listenable radio stations, both are magazines produced by people in the 30+ age group with the specific intention of promoting the sort of music you're talking about.  For those who don't know, both mags come with free CDs every month which showcase [mainly] contemporary music which you've almost no chance of hearing on the radio.  I don't rate everything that appears on the CDs (but who would?) but would recommend you check out both mags.

I have to say, I listened to Janice Long recently in the wee small hours and while I find her as a presenter incredibly annoying (doesn't always play full tracks, talks in stupid voices, keeps talking crap over songs that you want to listen to and, in fact, just keeps talking crap in between them too), the music she played came as something of a surprise: Jim Noir, The Hugh Trowsers Band, MuddyHead (ex-China Crisis)...

(Interesting Aside)

The site didn't automatically censor the word "crap"!  Unlike when I write Sc*nthorpe....

I recall seeing Madonna do "Holiday" on TotP and said "that's the last we'll hear of her".

I also recall when R1 did old chart shows on a Sunday afternoon - They'd do "this week from 1973" whcih I recall as a great year and the show would just remind me of how much crud I'd filtered out. I still find looking at Now compilations from a couple of years ago instructive.

In a couple of years people will be asking "You mean the Artic Monkeys were once considered new & innovative?"

Paul.
