I'm glad getlostdave mentioned Paste magazine - have you tried it's British equivalent, The Word, too? While it doesn't solve the problem of listenable radio stations, both are magazines produced by people in the 30+ age group with the specific intention of promoting the sort of music you're talking about. For those who don't know, both mags come with free CDs every month which showcase [mainly] contemporary music which you've almost no chance of hearing on the radio. I don't rate everything that appears on the CDs (but who would?) but would recommend you check out both mags.
I have to say, I listened to Janice Long recently in the wee small hours and while I find her as a presenter incredibly annoying (doesn't always play full tracks, talks in stupid voices, keeps talking crap over songs that you want to listen to and, in fact, just keeps talking crap in between them too), the music she played came as something of a surprise: Jim Noir, The Hugh Trowsers Band, MuddyHead (ex-China Crisis)...
